Halo, Xfire, and Vista
« on: July 28, 2009, 12:00:53 PM »
Well, almost everything is ok now, but whenever I launch to a Halo server from Xfire, it starts with a black screen, which only goes away when I minimize and bring halo back up. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Be sure that you're running Halo AND xfire as an Administrator, AND in XP Compatibility mode....

well, it doesn't happen all the time...

and I can only change the compatibilities of the shortcuts....so how do I change the compatibility of halo for when xfire launches it?

Navigate down into ...\Microsoft Games\Halo, find the halo.exe file, and RIGHT-click it and select Properties from the bottom of the popup.

Look familiar?  Select the "Compatibility" tag and... you know the rest!

That tab doesn't exist when I go all the way into the halo folder; it is only there when I right click the shortcut.

Well, it wasn't there last night, but it is now. Thanks again Mxy :)

And it didn't work :S still get a black screen half the time that I log into a server

This only happens to you SOMETIMES??

I suggest you try to pay extra attention to everything about the cases where it DOES happen then, and look for some commonality.  (I.e. Rule out "certain servers" as a contributing factor if it sometimes happens in that server, but not always....)

I had similar issues when I got my new Comp with Vista. Every little issue I had all boiled down to UAC. UAC is User Account Control. You can turn it off. Now there are folks who say turning it off is extremely bad because that is Vista security but honestly, It wont hurt a thing it will help. If you have a decent antivirus program and commen sense you will not have any trouble. I have had it turned off for a while now and have had no issues. I am not on my comp at the moment, I will have to look again to find out how to turn it off. When I get to my comp I will update this post.

Ok you go Start/Control Panel/Security/Security Center/other Security settings. You will see User Account Control there. Just turn it off. Let me know if you have any questions.  ;D
