Final Exam ?
« on: July 31, 2009, 01:30:23 PM »
Well yeah I have already sent in my final exam for algebra 2 online. But there is a question I put something besides A,B,C,D, or E. The equation is simple: Which of the following is S of 80 in the series 250 + 217 + 184 + 151 + ...? another way to word it is which is the eightieth number in the sequence? The answers they gave were... A. -84,280, B. -72,600, C. -54,300, or D. -42,100. My answer was not close. So any imput would be appriciated as to your answers. My answer is S of 80= -2390.

Thx for the sig Ds Black!

I'm 99.999999999% certain the answer is A. -84,280

The "S of 80" means the partial sum, not the 80th number in the arithmetic sequence.

Even if it's asking for "eightieth number in the sequence", your answer of -2390 would be wrong. In the sequence, you see the number is decreasing by 33 for every subsequent term. Therefore, the 80th number is...

A80 = 250-33(80-1) = -2357

Because the question is asking for the partial sum, then you can take the -2357 and add it to the first number in the sequence (250), divide it by 2, then multiply it by the n, which is 80.

So 80(250-2357)/2 = -84280, which corresponded to choice A.

I bet you will have a lot of fun in Calculus when you are dealing with infinite series and sequences.

Ahh X beat me to it, just learned that stuff in Pre-Calculus last year, AP Calculus AB for me this year, let's see how that'll go  :embarrassing:

Thank you Tanger!

No problem. If you have any more questions on your homework, feel free to let us know.

You'll be okay. All you have to remember is that Calculus is really just made up of just of two ideas:

Differentiation = finding the slope of the tangent line (aka the instantaneous rate of change)
Integration = find the area under the curve

Those two very different ideas are in fact connected to each other by the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, which basically say that they are inverses of one another.  Those two ideas have so many applications in real life that it is impossible to exxagerate.

But can you exaggerate? :P

Calculus is simply awesome. Complex is outrageous, and I've only really covered most of an introduction course in it.

If you think Complex [Variables?] is outrageous, then you haven't seen nothin' yet.

I'm very surprised your high school or community college would even offer a Complex Analysis class.

Or did you self-edumacate yourself?

I did an independent study offered by my school with my Calculus 3 teacher as an advisor (he used to be a very good college professor). Highest they offer is Calculus 3 at my school, which I had taken as a Junior so I needed moar :P

I imagine Complex Analysis must be tough without a background in Real Analysis.

What is the high school Calc III curriculum? Did you learn Green's, Stokes', Divergence, Curl, etc?

Yep. It was at least 90% of a regular Calc III class.

And Complex wasn't too difficult, since I didn't get into the truly hard stuff with stuff like conformal mapping or whatnot. Crazy stuff, crazy stuff.

Only 90%?   Your definition of "crazy" will definitely be redefined in a year or two.
