varied, transmuted, rooted

in ancient* Japan




* Okay, so "ancient" here really means "pre 1600s," but other, less formal forms of related Japanese poetry gave root to the more formulaic early versions of the Haiku, which technically "took form" in the 1600s.... ::)  :P
