Goodbye, Sam (The Koala)....

Sam the koala bear, saved by David Tree from the midst of Victoria Australia's fierce fire season last (local) summer, died yesterday. (FFitUS: That's kinda like when the original Smokey (The) Bear died in 1976....)

Sam was a rallying cry to help the area rebound from the devastation wrought by the infernos. ("But from the ashes arose....")

We in the US missed our beloved Smokey Bear upon his passing, so we salute the passing of Sam (The) Koala similarly.

I remember seeing the pictures of that Koala with Tree.. put me to tears.  Sad also that she survived the fire only to be taken by disease... but its a blessing she was in care where they could alleviate her pain.

Sam is being stuffed and put on display in (I think) the Melbourne Museum .


Us Aussies were very upset to hear this as you can imagine , but it serves as a reminder of how lasting the effects of the bushfires really are.
