so..... the wife just got a laptop...
« on: August 08, 2009, 01:16:15 PM »
SO we now have the home PC and a laptop and I have 2 questions...

What kit do I need to convert my hard-line ADSL connection to a wireless one?
and (now this question takes many parts) what is the best way to keep my HAlo running smoothly from the home PC?

for example... do i need to keep hold of the adsl modem and connect via this to avoid the curse of the dreaded wireless? or can I connect wirelessly through the PC as well as the laptop?

I understand that, if we are sharing the bandwidth through the router, my halo performance will be laggy and crap, but if the wife's laptop is disconnected, will the wireless connection suffice for me on the home pc, or will I need to connect via the adsl modem?

I believe I have waffled on for long enough now, I hope i have offered enough information

Who's your provider/ISP? In the US, if it's AT&T they'll give you a combo modem/(wireless)router/switch all-in-one device for free....

Easy: DO NOT PLAY OVER WIRELESS!  ::)

If you're an AT&T *DSL customer, just get the combo device and you've got all the options available!

*edit* GAH!  I see now that it's NOT going to be AT&T, given your location, Fraggle!  Try contacting your ADSL provider tho, but I have my doubts this neat-o device is in use outside the US much, if at all....

As far as I can work out Mxy, the providers over here use such devices as 'lures' for new customers only. There is no way that my provider will give us a router or any kind of equipment for free. they're just too tight! I'd end-up paying about £40 for one.... so i'm off shopping tomorrow.

Thankx anyway Mxy, you've pretty much confirmed my fears that i'm gonna have to pay-out.

I have a DSL router (D-Link DSL-604) with wireless.  It was probably about the 40 quid you mentioned.  If i have the laptop in the same room as the router, I plug it in directly, otherwise I use the wireless connection, which I wouldn't recommend for gaming.  If you are direct connected on the computer, but wife is using the laptop and wireless, I don't think you'll have lag issues on the PC.  You might, but I don't think it will have that much effect.

Panic not friends.... I have purchased a linksys WAG54G2 from Cisco systems. It was £55 (about $90) but well worth it i think.

I've been working errattic shifts so I'll be setting it up tomorrow. The PC will be cable-connected and the laptop will be wireless.
Halo will, of course be kept on the PC.

Thanks for all your contributions guys.
