i Highly recommend David Eddings (Belgariad) and Terry Pratchett (Discworld)for the fantasy readers out there. Any sci-fi fans should definitely pick up an Issac Asimov (I.Robot), Anne McCaffrey, or Orson Scott-Card book.

Today, I am mostly reading Tolkien's The Hobbit, and Andy MacDermott's Hunt for Atlantis.

The lord of the rings series are really, really awesome! The only thing I'd say is that it took me a while getting into them because Tolkien uses his full command of the English language to immerse his readers in his world and it can be a little difficult to get into them if you're only reading in short 10-minute bursts like I was when I first read them.

I didn't really appreciate them until I had given myself several hours to re-read them all. My only advice is to take them slow and get involved in the storyline.

I read Lord of the rings some years ago.

Wow ! Awesome, but the first book was very hard to read (and understand).

In scifi, i also recommand HG Wells (Time Machine, War of the wolrds).

and in french writers, i recommand Voltaire's books especially "Candide" and Guy de maupassant's books ("Le horla" is an awesome novel, between horror and fantasy.

Of course Jules verne.

Can't go wrong with the 'His Dark Materials' series by Phillip Pullman: Northern Lights; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass.

Note to Christians: although these books have got an atheist message in them, don't be put off by that: after all, it's just a novel - and anyway, what's faith without questions?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you could have CS Lewis' Narnia series - anything but atheist books.

Well it seems I am too late to recommend Lord of the Rings.  Fraggle has it right....you need to give those books some time so they can give you a good story.  I've read them several times.

I'd also recommend Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein.  (for the record...not only is the book better than the movie, the book is nothing like the movie)

If you want to go in a little different direction, I thoroughly enjoyed The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.

And finally, you could try books from the Dragonlance world.  Start with The Chronicles trilogy beginning with The Dragons of Autumn Twilight.  I generally prefer the books written by Weis and Hickman.  Although "The Legend of Huma" by Robert Knaak is one of my favorites.

Archer

The Inheritance Cycle is a fantastic series I agree, and I can't wait until he writes the last book of the series.  The Lord of the Rings is also one of my all time favorites.  It can be a bit heavy, meaning Tolkien is very descriptive and some parts can really drag on.  If you want to fully appreciate Lord of the Rings definitely read the appendix and all the extra stuff in the back of Return of the King.  It has back story, elvish language translations, time lines, stuff that happens after the series, character descriptions, and lots of cool stuff.  Fellowship of the Ring was by far the best of of the series (excluding the Hobbit).

The Merlin series by T. A. Barron was a fantastic series I read a while back.  I remember I couldn't put it down I read the book wherever I went lol.  If your a fantasy fan definitely check this series out.  The Midnighters was also an excellent fantasy series, very good books.  I read fantasy a lot and it's my favorite so I used to know a lot of good ones but that's all I can remember right now.

Thanks Vintage, it's awesome!

Can't go wrong with Watership Down.

For that matter I think it's unfair to treat the Harry Potter series as Children's books. There's a lot to them, well worth reading.

Finally, I find Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories - both the novels and the shorts - to be fantastic books, with humour, action and excitement. If you can look beyond the sometimes embarrassingly archaic language, it's truly brilliant reading.
Check out my Short introduction... corner and my "Historical figures who should perhaps be better-known" thread!!

+1!!

I also want to add "On the Eve" by Turgenev.  Not really "fantasy", but it is an enjoyable read for anyone beyond 15 or 16 years.
