Zee or Zed
« on: December 05, 2010, 12:08:36 AM »
No real point to this, just wondering how you guys pronounce the letter "Z".

Honestly myself, I started saying Zed ever since I heard it from a Canadian, it just kinda stuck. Although it seems British and other Euro people say Zed as well, heard it on Top Gear many times.

Of course, is is often the case, the Americans pronounce it "zee" because of an earlier English dialect. This time the pronunciation "zee" probably came from somewhere in Yorkshire. Since I've never heard "zee" in all my time living here, it must have died out here and been replaced with "zed". Which is anyway the more correct pronunciation historically, based on the Greek "zeta".

I got into a heated argument with Hydra once about the pronunciation of the letter H. He pronounces it "haitch" while I pronounce it "aitch". He would say "what sound does an H make? A "huh" sound. Haitch."

I asked him what sound does a Z make and told him I'd say "haitch" if he'd say "zee".

The End. ;D

I pronounce it both ways, because I'm awesome that way.

Although I rarely say it anyway, unless I'm singing the alphabet or verbally spelling something with a Z in it, which is uncommon.

As long as you pronounce beta properly (and not as beeeeta), I'm fine with hearing either. One thing I am curious about is the tendency for at least some Aussies and Brits to add a subtle to not-so-subtle 'r' sound after an "uh" sound. My Classical Physics teacher always talks about his eta-rs and theta-rs.
