Bungie's Marathon Trilogy Is Now Free For All PC Platforms!
« on: December 03, 2011, 02:16:17 AM »
To quote G4TV:

"Before there was Halo, there was Marathon. The sci-fi FPS for Xbox that catapulted Bungie Studios into the game biz limelight wasn't exactly a follow-up to the studio's Marathon games, but you can feel the DNA of Master Chief's adventures woven into the fabric of the earlier releases. Now, anyone with a computer can find that out for themselves, as all three Marathon games are available as free downloads.

The release is possible thanks to the efforts of an open-source developer community for Aleph One, a game engine built out of Marathon 2's source code that's been optimized for modern-day PCs. The three games -- Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity -- are available for PC, Mac and Linux platforms, and they all sport features like OpenGL shader support, Internet co-op and multiplayer, modern mouse-look, gamepad support, HD textures and user mods, a press announcement reveals. The pack also includes v1.0 of the Aleph One engine."

The link to download all three for free is: http://marathon.sourceforge.net/

I myself have downloaded all 3, and have started the first one. Despite the graphics and gameplay style feeling quite dated, the game is still a ton of fun to play, and it was extra cool seeing the connections with the game and Halo that I have already observed. Plus, the price tag of free never hurts does it?

Cool! Downloading the first now. I have the second downloaded on my console already. Great to play the game that inspired the Halo we play today.

They are wonderful games. Marathon 2 (Durandal) is the best of the the 3 in my opinion.
Sincerely,

I downloaded it and tried to play, but didn't understand the instructions to get it started. Arg.

You mean you couldn't get it to run at all? Is it still in the zipped folder? Because if it is the first thing you need to do is extract (Right click -> Extract all) it from there. Then, just go into the newly created folder and click on the Marathon (A1) .exe application file.

Once the game starts, you should also probably go into the settings and change the controls to something more to what you are used to.

Let me know if you are still having troubles.

THAT GAME SCARES ME!!!

Add me on Steam!
I lived in the days of Tanxs when he was but a kid.
BFM clan only scrims were my favorite. I was so proud to make it into the ranks of this clan, but proud enough to let that be my downfall.
I am only happy that I got to experience such a legendary clan.
