I'm OK asking others to watch language etc, also re blatant rule infractions, but I'm not immune to rule slipups myself, so thought I'd get professional help.

Is it OK to ask users (politely, of course)  to change inappropriate names?

If you find anything offensive it is within your rights to ask for them to stop the language, or change the name.  If it's something that doesn't really bother you, but you know it's not allowed, you can point it out politely once to them, and if they persist, best to just leave it alone. Trying to stop them often just eggs them on, and when you don't have admin powers they call your bluff and you really can't do anything.  Best to ignore them really and try to get someone to come help.
