**FIXED** Halo slow?
« on: July 01, 2008, 04:50:00 AM »
suddenly for the last few days, halo has been extremely slow and laggy,  even in the campaign mode.  None of my other programs seem to be running slower than usual.  Do you guys possibly know what happened?

the only thing that i may know of that is causing your problem is you have too many processes or programs running at once.  you can end processes and programs you don't need by going to the control panel by hitting ctrl+alt+del, then click on processes, right click on the ones you don't need, and select end process.  ones that you can end are ones like googledesktop.exe, and any other stuff like that.  just whatever you don't end the system, or system idle process one.  you probably don't want to end a lot of processes that are run by the system.  hoped this helped you.

[Admin: pls move this thread to Tech Support FAQ? TYVMiA!]

STOP!

Um, despite the perceived "ease" with which this is described above ^^^, this is in fact, "computer brain surgery" and is NOT to be done willy-nilly!

It is VERY easy to "kill" a process that is vital to the running of your machine - and that can easily corrupt your system!

Here, use THIS info to deal with "unnecessary" processes!:

do you have the proper amount of RAM, hard drive space, and video card capacity?

GAH!  AGAIN with the fatal suggestions!

Try DEFRAGING FIRST, BEFORE you reformat & reinstall Windows!

I just looked back through tthis thread, and I cannot believe that we've all skipped the FIRST THING that we should've told him to check!:

Please tell us what Antivirus, AntiMalware, and any other (e.g. Firewall) software that you have installed on your computer!

You might have contracted a virus, adbot, or some other nasty....

Well, not renewing them might only mean that they haven't been getting updated.  While that's not good, it's not as bad as not having them AT ALL.

FYI: I (still!) recommend these FREE programs:

AVG Free Antivirus (To me the jury's still out on their new v8, as it looks to have bloated to rival Norton - which I recommend AGAINST - but if you have nothing, v8 might be worth a try....)

AVG AntiSpyware (No longer available for free; No good alternative yet.)

AdAware

Spybot Search & Destroy

Note!: UNinstall any existing Anti*ware programs BEFORE you install any new ones, as some of them treat "the competition" as spyware!

i used spybot and cleaned a lot of stuff but its still not working very fast unfortunately. (basically the problem is that the game skips a lot of frames and "jumps" a lot)

i noted today:
Whenever i go in a server some other people say that they are very laggy even though their and my ping arent very high.

That sounds like a server problem, in which case, there is nothing you can do but find a different server to play in, or have the server provider fix the issue. It could just be from too many people playing in a server that cant handle that load.
