Fun test!

I scored a 124 with 2 minutes on the clock. Some of those really were hard for me, others I saw the pattern immediately.

Dang, i was hoping for mensa level lol, just so I could brag to my wife next time we argue over something. "Dear, you forget, you are talking... to a GENIUS!"

124... but the tasks are very heavily focused on spatial relations, pattern recognition and mathematics skills.  A real IQ test would also take into account verbal/word comprehension and logical reasoning.

Sorry, can't help myself. I got my graduate degree in Applied Experimental Psychology, concentrating in Measurement (i.e., the design of psychological tests) and statistics.  :P

Verbal/word comprehension has nothing to do with an IQ, just what you've been told. This actually figures out whether your mind can understand these sorts of patterns, which require logical reasoning. This is the only IQ test that I've ever taken that I believe to have any validity at all. Language is too ambiguous to be used in an IQ test. And I saw nothing dealing with mathematics. . . .

I got a 127.

Only a math-y person would say that... Unfortunately, I'm a word-y person and couldn't think of a better word than "math-y". But hey, 121 for me!

Yeah, that test was clearly slanted toward abstract reasoning, only one part of a good measurement method.

I don't think the timing affected your score... unless it ran out, thus marking your remaining questions wrong, probably....

You've touched on one of the most debated issues (as Mxy also noted): Just what is "Intelligence" and what does it comprise?  One-dimensional measures might show some degree of validity, but a single test is almost never comprehensive enough to capture the entire spectrum of any given construct, especially one as complex and as multifaceted as "intelligence." Think of "intelligence" as a big pot of vegetable soup, and each "IQ test" or other measure of intelligence as a ladle you dip into the big pot. With one dip of the ladle, you might get some peas, some carrots, a little onion... but you might have missed the turnips, cabbage, potatoes, broccoli, green beans... But if you take two, or three, or 10 dips of the ladle, you're more likely to capture a little bit of everything, and therefore get a more complete picture of "intelligence."

Surely verbal comprehension is SOME indicator of cognitive functioning, but I suppose it's debatable whether it represents an innate characteristic or simply a skill set.  But I'll posit this much: We certainly credit the loquacious with more intelligence than those who utter only ape-like grunts.

As for the mathematics skills, you don't actually have to solve math problems per se to test mathematical abilities. Geometry falls under the realm of mathematics, and someone who grasps geometric principles faster than the next person probably has better mathematics comprehension, too.

My last comment: Medic and I got the same score.  But I'm still smarter than he is. Ha!

i dont like these kind of iq tests, scored a 103, but eh lucky guessing, had like 40 more minutes on the clock, scored a 133 on another iq test, but that one was on math skills and history and geography

Does this mean that by using words like "cognitive functioning" and "loquacious" you represent yourself as a Smarty-pants?

Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_Hydra on February 09, 2008, 03:23:54 AM
I only got 105. I'm no good at the logic thing it seems. On other IQ tests I've gotten scores from 125-160. So I don't believe in them.

An IQ test really should not be based on how someone comprehends some logic puzzles. Some really smart people are inclined to think differently. If it were to be a "Intelligence" test, or a General Knowledge test with a range of different questions, I know I could score easily 130++++.

The other thing is this test only contributes correct answers to your scores...If it is logic then perhaps answers should be ranked on how close one is to getting the correct score...There are so many flaws that render this test completely useless XD

Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_Edison on February 09, 2008, 03:21:50 PM
Is an IQ supposed to be constant throughout life, or at least generally constant? I think when I took this three to four years ago, I got a 112, which is 15 off of what I got this time.
Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_Hydra on February 09, 2008, 03:33:57 PM
It is supposed to be generally constant.

The other reason this is flawed is because it doesn't measure your age ::)

Each age level is supposed to get a completely different IQ. (IE. 16 will be higher than 42).
Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: Daigoro on February 09, 2008, 06:36:49 PM
That is correct Hydra. He said something like it wasn't normalized too. He may have been referring to the age thing, but he might also have meant that the scores could be too compressed. Because I personally feel that I'm a 200. In fact, I define intelligence as being like me. There's only one quality I have more than intelligence. And that's modesty. Thank you all and good night!

ahhh lol so u people are debated about IQ test

well your right, everyone has different minds and trying to unify their intelligence its like comparing an apple to an orange. For example Jane is a walking encyclopedia, while people like Edison is a walking calculator. This IQ test only focus on someones ability to detect and understand patterns.

Someone who might get like 74 in this test can be magically 100 times smarter in other fields then someone with 140+

That was harder than Tickle.com's IQ test.  Even though I did get 126 on that test...

Yeah, some of the problems near the end were like, what???? I finally found the pattern those, i think...

Usually if you read left to right, then down, it makes a little more sense.  Other times you have to read top to bottom first then to the right.  There's a pattern in each one, just gotta find it.

It also depends on your state of mind when you take the test.  If you're exhausted, it will be harder to concentrate.  On the other hand, if you have too much energy, you may speed through the test but you may make more mistakes.  You have to have the right amount of energy and the right mindset to score well on any test or quiz.

That is, unless you're a self-proclaimed genius, then why spend time on useless information like IQ?

118 I got - normally a bit higher than that on IQ tests - many of these seemed to have no actual correlation whatsoever.
According to Facebook's IQ test app, which told me mine was 144 - I'm more inclined to trust that as it was other things as well as shape recognition.

118 I got - normally a bit higher than that on IQ tests - many of these seemed to have no actual correlation whatsoever.
According to Facebook's IQ test app, which told me mine was 144 - I'm more inclined to trust that as it was other things as well as shape recognition.

completely agree, other IQ tests i get anywhere from 130 to 140 with varying things, this I got a 103 on, but maybe that was because i kinda rushed through it  :)

Well I've always been slow at all kinds of tests, so I used up practically the whole time period.  I didn't actually see the timer until about the 5th question, so I was like, ACK why's the clock going backwards!

I got a 129, so I'm pretty happy with that.  The last question was pretty tricky I thought.  I'm still not sure if I ever reasoned the pattern correctly, but I nearly ran out of time.

Your IQ does not change as you get older ::)

You can do things to IMPROVE it of course, but in general your IQ when you are 3 years old will change very little to when you are 103.

Hm? how is that? I'm sure that when someone that is 5 years old takes one of these tests and scores poorly on it(say ~80), he achieved such a score due to his lack of knowledge to such types of puzzles or questions. Therefore, the more one learns the greater knowledge one gains to solve such situations as an IQ test. I seriously doubt someone doesn't increase their intelligence as they grow if they try since "with age comes wisdom".

The IQ system is based around one's intelligence. Hence, someone who scores 3/10 on a test may get the same score as someone who is 35 and scored 8/10, which may also be the same as someone who is 95 and scored 6/10. The real IQ tests are adjusted for age.

Also, there are IQ tests made specifically for children to test their IQ, tests they will understand. Many children are given these tests during kindergarten and their early years of primary school.

My IQ before I went to school was 142. Now it 141, 15 years later.

I am not bothering to read all 9 pages of this thread so this may already be explained but unless things have been drastically change in the past 15 or so years IQ is not an absolute measure of one's intelligence.  IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient i.e. intelligence ratio.  It is a measure of your intellectual age compared to your real age as compared to a measure set by an average of the rest of the population.  For example a 10 year old that tests to have the intelligence of a 20 year old would have an IQ of 200 but the standard that sets what the intelligence of a 10 year old should be is based on the average scores all the other 10 year olds have achieved.  One of the inherent problems with traditional IQ tests is that while it is easy to tell a general increase in intelligence in 10 year olds to 20 year olds it becomes increasingly difficult to tell any real difference in average intelligence of say 30 year olds compared to 40 year olds.  For that reason IQ tests have traditionally only been considered to be relevant when given in childhood and it is that IQ that is applied to you for the rest of your life.  This is because there is a difference between learned knowledge over time and inherent intelligence which is your ability to learn.  The person who has scored the highest legitimate IQ is Marilyn vos Savant who at the age of 10 years 1 Month tested with a mental age of 22 years 10 Months for an IQ of 228.  Tests like the one in this thread are commonly called IQ tests but are in fact measuring something very different than what the traditional IQ tests measure.  Still very fun though.  :P

90 doesn't mean you score higher than 90% of the people. Essentially, the scores are on a gaussian (aka normal distribution) where the average is 100 and the standard deviation denotes how spread out scores are and whatnot. IQ Wikipedia Page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iq_test).
Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_Kiwi on July 25, 2009, 05:59:02 PM

Yeah, so 100 is average.  I don't think these tests are very accurate, so if you're between 90-110 that's probably about average.  130-140 I think is pretty smart.

If you take lots of these tests I think your score generally improves as you get used to the type of questions.

400+ is really very smart.

Title: Re: What is your IQ???

There technically is no highest score, so you could potentially have an IQ of 9,999,999,999,999, but because it is based on a normal distribution, most scores will fall within the 50 -150 range.  This calculator only goes up to 400 apparently.  I think the highest actual IQ someone has is around 180?  I'm not quite sure.

there is no highest score? why? i thught my 90 was like good. and its like getting an A in class. so if theres no highest score, then Edison was lying when he said he 'score perfectly' then? thats maybe y he didnt say what he score

so if my score is 90 how that put me in comparison with other?
Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_Kiwi on July 25, 2009, 06:44:44 PM

There is no highest IQ.  A really really smart person could have a 300 or a 400, who knows.

But these tests only have a certain amount of questions.  So if there are 20 questions and you get all of them right, then you get the highest score you can on that test.  But the test isn't a perfect indication of your actual IQ, it's just an estimate.

So 90 makes you about average.
Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: Goalie on July 25, 2009, 06:53:59 PM
100 is average (compared to everyone in the world, so they say).  Above 100 is "above average" and there are other categories beyond that.  Below 100 is "below average," but like I said, most scores will fall within the 50-150 range.

Tanner - It doesn't work quite like that. Techjnically, someone could have an IQ of 5,563,590 if their brain capacity is that high. There is no limit. If you score 90 on a real IQ test, I'd guess you're  above about 40-45% of the population.

Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: Goalie on July 25, 2009, 08:36:11 PM
There is no perfect, unless you define perfect as ∞.

scoring a 100 as an IQ means that you are above 50% of the population.  That doesn't mean that scoring 200 will put you above 100% of the population.

Take a look at this wiki entry on the The Normal Distribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_distribution), and maybe that will clear things up.  The graphs on the right show several different "Bell curves," and as you can see, there really is no end to those lines, meaning there is no perfect and there is no 0.

The score on an IQ doesn't really mean anything towards any job, degree, or any other score.  It's just a measure of how well you can comprehend, analyze, apply, etc. different ideas.

There are of course many types of intelligence: kinesthetic (body) intelligence, linguistic intellience, musical intel, interpersonal intel, etc. So almost everyone is special in some way.

The test may have been bias in my favor because of my years in college studying mathematics, software engineering, and chemistry. As a result, I brain may have been rewired to be a lot more efficient at pattern recognition, logical thinking, spatial manipulations, and doing image visualization/processing in my head.

I agree with you Edison; this one of the much better online IQ tests. IQ tests based on the Raven's Progressive Matrices are known to have a higher efficacy. But you are still going to go down for giving me a terrible headache! Now I got to go to the 24/7 drugstore to get some meds for my migraine. Thanks. This is entirely logic, actually. Math is the most expressible form of logic there is.

Pretty much.  Also, almost everything in this world can be explained or modeled by mathematics.  Kind of unfair to blame it on math.  The IQ test is much more of a logic test than a math test IMO.

While I'm at it...

The probability of someone in this world having an IQ of 300+ is almost the same as the chance of winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning, and then a meteorite come crashing down your home... all the same day! It's definitely possible, no doubt. Given enough time, someone will be born with an IQ of 300+... eventually, but it's highly unlikely that person is currently alive right now somewhere on Earth given the current population of about 6.7 billion people.

I scored 114 ± 16.

The standard deviation isn't the same as the margin of error, so you can't really say that. The standard deviation tells how the population is distributed around the mean, which is 100 in this case.

Tanner - It doesn't work quite like that. Techjnically, someone could have an IQ of 5,563,590 if their brain capacity is that high. There is no limit. If you score 90 on a real IQ test, I'd guess you're  above about 40-45% of the population.

we can always give him the exact answer he is seeking. Tanner, your percentile is the area under the curve by integrating from negative infinity to 90.

26.6th percentile. You score higher than 26.6% of the population. Congrats!

how do i know where i stand now?????? what that long curly S thing on the left??? and where i plug the 96 to get my new ranking?

That's essentially saying that 26.6% of people who take the IQ test with a standard deviation of 16 score 90 or below.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but theoretically if you continuously test your IQ over and over again, you will find an average number that all of your scores will be around.  This means that a person's IQ will not change that much from age 1 to age 100 (given the person is in good health).  However, there are many factors that could possibly contribute to the changes you may see, for example a person's health when they're given the test, or the atmosphere, and many other factors.  It's basically a test, so with all tests there are outside interferences that may inhibit or help a person's score.  But generally speaking, a person's IQ will not change dramatically within a small timeframe.

And that weird curly S is called an integral sign, and its used in a type of mathematics called Calculus.  If you have a calculator that can do integrals (denoted usually by the curly S or the phrase "int()", you would plug in your score where the 90 is in the equation above.  But it can be complex to set up in a calculator for someone who hasn't taken a Calculus course.

I would believe a real IQ test would cost around the same as any standardized test, so possibly in the $100s.  But I'm not sure because each company gives out their own test, so they each set their own price.

I've actually taken that test a few times over a few years. One thing they do with IQ scores is taking age into account to normalize everything more, and I believe the result I posted was from a time two years prior to the post, when I was 13. That also happened to be around the time that I took school far less seriously than I should have, which had negative consequences many years later. In later times, I got higher scores by more than 20 points I believe. In some ways, this is more of a score of the combination of how much you've exercised your intelligence, or however you want to say that, with your intelligence.

One idea behind the IQ test is that you have a set base intelligence, which would learn more towards it being genetics. But as far as I am aware, it has not been linked to genetics solely. It's another of those areas where people argue nature vs. nurture, though in this case I personally think it's obviously both, and that genetics do play a large role in intelligence, or at least the desire to learn certain things, which is why siblings (like my sister and I) can be so different even if they are raised similarly with the idea that they should do well in school and learn a lot, and so on.

There's a bunch to this topic, and I think Booyah posted a link to somewhere with a bunch of information on IQ tests, or at least he had a long post, I forget which.

In order to do integrals, you would need a powerful scientific calculator, one that does more than just addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  One example is the TI-83 and -84 series. (Which cost around $100-150)  These have a function on them which I believe is "fint()" that does integrals.  For this calculator, the input would look something like this:
fint(x2+5x+14, x, 0, 10)
Where x2+5x+14 is the equation that you want the answer for, x defines the variable (you could use any letter in the alphabet, you just have to define which variable you want because the calculator stores numbers inside letters), 0 is the lower bound (where you want to start) and 10 is the upper bound (where you want to end).

Like I said, unless you've taken a course in Calculus, this will probably seem like a different language to you.  I'd probably ask your parents or other siblings and see if they know what I'm talking about.  If not, then one of your teachers may know about integrals.

As I read, IQ scores were in the past used to determine how well a child would do in school, work, etc.  They can tailor an IQ test to fit a specific age group, and therefore get a good idea of how well that child is doing compared to everyone else.  Usually until you reach the age of 20, you would have to take a specific test to determine your IQ, because an adult IQ test would not give a correct score because of the differences in ability to comprehend.

The SAT and ACT are actually supposed to be like IQ tests, but as you can see from all these studying things, there are ways you can essentially cheat the system, like with any test (this is part of the reason I refused to study for the SAT and ACT).

For integrals, there should be some online ones. Wolfram probably has one.

The TI82 should be able to do integrals.  There isn't a button for integrals, but if you press the MATH button then 9, you should get the "fnInt(" function.  This is what the equation should look like:

fnInt(1/(16*√(2*π)*e^(-(X/100)^2*2*16^2),X,0,Z)*100

π can be found by pressing "2nd" and then "^" (but if you can't find it, then just use the number 3.14),  √ is the square root function which can be found by pressing "2nd" then "x2", and e can be found by pressing "2nd" then "LN".  "Z" is your score,  so if you scored 112, then your equation would look something like this:

fnInt(1/(16*√(2*π)*e^(-(X/100)^2*2*16^2),X,0,112)*100

If you need any more help with setting this up, you can send me a Personal Message (PM for short) and we can work it out that way.

The test gave a "140+" because it's not a very accurate test.  When someone scores far away from 100, it becomes much harder to tell what the actual number is because this test isn't as accurate as other IQ tests.  So you really can't put "140+" into the calculator, but you could put "140" in there and get a number that would be very close to the actual answer.

As previously stated there are many different types of IQ's. However one thing they all have in common is that they take age into account. Or at least the "real" ones do... There are so many different types of IQ tests that test for different things. As for the nature vs nuture it's obviously both, as stated previously. Again why studies have shown that listening to classical music increases spatial intelligence (Supposedly the areas of the brain that pertain to musical and spatial intelligences overlap somewhat, or so many believe).

One thing that I find ironic about IQ tests is that they are supposed to be based on a bell curve system (which I really hate), 100 being exactly average and anything above being above average and anything below being below average.  The problem that this could potentially create is that those who are certified geniuses could easily differ in levels of intelligence from generation to generation or age group to age group, depending on the type of test. As our societies continue to becoming increasingly intelligent, the "average" is going to increase as well. However, we will often deem those who score very lowly on IQ tests incapable of performing well in society while IMO many of those who score low are much more capable than we deem them. Of course there are exceptions, and there always will be. v.v -end rant- xD

He is implying that he has done MANY MANY IQ tests. There are dozens out there. Edison is not lying. On one test he did get a perfect score, on others he has gotten 112, and on others again he has gotten 132-140.

I'm the same, I vary from 125-145, and on one recently I got 152.

The IQ tests on the Internet are terrible. They are NOT real IQ tests. A good IQ test tests basic cognitive skills like shape recognition and patterns, but also other things like spelling/grammar, maths, general knowledge, ability to solve problems, etc.
Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_Edison on August 02, 2009, 06:08:02 AM
Exactly, and the score of 112 is from when I was thirteen years old, and the test didn't take into account the age of the person. It was most likely for adults, which is why I score much higher than that now. So no, I am definitely not lying. You will notice that I've posted other scores that are in the aforementioned range long before you joined the discussion.

I just realized that I really messed up rewriting that equation...

If you have a score of 96, then your score will be above approximately 40.13% of the population.

If Edison had a score of 112, then his score is above approximately 77.34% of the population.
If Edison scored a 140, then his score is above approximately 99.38% of the population.

The farther you get away from 100, the closer to 100% (if above 100) or 0% (if below 100) you are.

Also, remember that I said if you take IQ tests continuously, you'll eventually find a certain score (called the average) that all the scores seem to be around.  This average score will be closer to a person's actual IQ than one single test's score.  So you may get a 100 one day, you may get 200 another day, and 150 the next day.  The average would be around 150, but without further testing, we won't know a person's actual IQ, but we can get a general idea of where it is at.  The more tests (or trials as it is called in probability) you take, the closer you will get to the exact answer.  Taking 100 tests will get you a more exact answer than just 1 test.

Identical twins don't necessarily sound the same.

Also, the SAT and ACT are supposed to be essentially an IQ test (although entirely different), and if we are to go by my scores in that (without studying; I think studying for them is lame), I'm roughly in the top 2% or 1%. Of course, a huge problem with them is the fact that people study a bunch and pay for that, of course, and the essay portion is a terrible measure of how well one writes, but meh.

If you can study for it, it's not an IQ test.
Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_Edison on August 02, 2009, 10:26:39 PM
It's not studying per se, but cheating the system. Cheating the system mainly happens in the essay, which is why I think it's worthless. But then the prep courses really teach you how to find the answer not by knowing the answer, but by knowing what it's not. Then there's doing answers that are similar to it, but it's not like that's not possible with a real IQ test.
Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: Titanium»X« on August 02, 2009, 11:43:46 PM
I agree with Hydra. I wouldn't call the SAT/ACT as essentially an IQ test.

IQ tests are classified as an aptitude tests, which are intended to measure your mental abilities and your capacity to learn and understand. They were originally designed to identify children in schools with special needs.

If an "IQ test" asks for general knowledge, grammar, etc, then it's not an IQ test, but an assessment/achievement test to test on what you've learned.   Knowing the names of all 206 bones in your body doesn't make you intelligent; it just means you took the time to memorize them all.

With that said, there are so many horrible IQ tests out there that give people an inflated IQ score, and when they finally take a good one, then they claim, "Oh this IQ test is t3h sux0r, I took another IQ test and scored a 184!, therefore this isn't a reall IQ test".

Most IQ tests you take online and offline do not pass the reliability, standardization, and validity test, and therefore are not scientifically nor statistically sound.  Statistically speaking, your IQ is a continuous random variable and it will always pass the normality test, no doubt about that.

There's a lot of misinformation in this thread, but I think I'm going to stop here.  :)

Also, the SAT and ACT are supposed to be essentially an IQ test (although entirely different)

Nothing in your post is new >.>

Psychologists wanted me to do them for their research about twins, so it was free

I think that's why I did a real one too :)

Who won :P Are you identical twins though?

I thought most identical twins sound almost the same on Vent?  It's like a dead giveaway lol.

Hehe my voice would be the only thing that's the same as my twin sisters'
Pretty hilarious...when me or my sis tell othere we're twins, no one believes us (they usually don't even believe we are sisters). But when we're on the phone or w/e our friends don't even know who they are talking to (which can be pretty hilarious when I'm pretending to be her while talking to her boyfriend  :siderofl: )

My IQ ended up being measured as a 124 for that particular test Taipan posted (with the default 16 deviation).  I guess that's the 60th percentile in the "High" range for that test.  Also, umm... I did not even see that clock there.  I guess it probably took me 15 minutes, but I had no pressure from knowing a clock was there.  It could have hurt my score that I did not take my time, but could have also helped my score because I had no pressure from the clock.  rofl!

When I took the ACT, it said I was in the top 1% for mathematics.  My english, however, was below the average.  Science was a above average.  I am not the most well-balanced person.  xD

It seems like I used to do better on those things.  I was quite the young wit.  I suppose once your mind crystallizes to some degree, it lets everybody else catch up.

Ha same here! Although I declined because they were focusing mainly on debating and english related things which I had absolutely no interest in, so I stuck to my own subject choices. (Later to find out everyone in that group got taken to Australia for some kind of competition! Aghh, I wasn't a happy camper....)

Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_JANE on June 18, 2011, 08:19:11 PM

119, two points lower than what I got in Feb '08...

Dunno what the deviation thing is, but it changed the scale and score.

Title: Re: What is your IQ???
Post by: BFM_Edison on June 18, 2011, 10:41:24 PM
It's basically just something that indicates how "spread out" the bell curve used is. What the test checks is what percentage of people you score better than and relates that to the IQ score's theoretical bell curve, whose shape is based on the mean (100) and the standard deviation. It's just a way of mapping one number, percent you score above, to another, IQ, and it doesn't scale linearly. That is, the difference in percentage between 100 and 110 is greater than the difference between 110 and 120. This is because you have to have the IQ go off to infinity in order to reach higher than 100%.

Got bored halfway through, most of the patterns were obvious and others just had me scratching my head.

101, tested as 120 in high school, so not that far off ironically.
