100% CPU usage *Re-opened*
« on: October 15, 2008, 12:52:26 PM »
when ever i start up Halo my CPU usage sky rockets from 5-18% up to 95-100%.
I have erased about 15% of my hard drive to give it some extra space and defragged.
I have restarted my comp and have had only Halo running and still have 100% usage.

i haven't been able to play Halo for a little over 2 weeks and haven't been able to admin and race. my life has no meaning now  :'( halp meh pweeze!

I know malware / spyware can spike your CPU usage but in my experience that sort of thing has only spiked it in specific patterns (i.e spike CPU Usage to 80-90% for 10-20 seconds then everything is fine for a few mins and will then it would repeat over and over until i  had found and killed the process). Have you run your virus scan / trojan scan / spyware scan etc etc etc?

I use progs like Security Task Manager (thats to pick up running processes that the normal Windows task Manager wont, gotta pay for it but there is a 30 day trial available to download), Spybot, Adaware and a couple other programs if this problem occurs (i use more than one program as not all programs pick up the same stuff, tis a reason why both spybot and adaware have been designed to work together these days as they used to conflict with each other).

Whether it is that though, dunno, scan anyway in the mean time and await better advice from our favorite tech wizzard.  ;D

How much RAM do you have?

If you have a low amount of RAM this could cause high CPU usage in some cases.

Also...

Hit CTRL + ALT + DEL and check in the processes list. Unless your experienced in ending processes do not end any yet. Just make an estimate of how many are running and post it here.

Open the Task Manager and click on performance. Inside the box "Physical Memory (K)" you find your RAM size in KB (1st number behinder "total"). Below that you see the RAM not used. The difference of both is the used RAM.

When running Halo maybe another process starts and causes a 100% usage.
Sometimes when I start programs which wanna connect to the Internet my CPU usage rises very high. Maybe your Halo has connecting problems. But I'm not quite sure.

Have you tried running in window mode, and having task manager open next to it.  Is it halo.exe that shoots up to near 100%?

Had you made any changes you remember before this started happening?
- changing halo video settings
- windows updates
- any other updates/installs

only that my mom bought more Norton Virus protection. it shouldn't spike my cpu usage that high though. plus she gets these dumb little iSpy games but i always delete them bc she never plays them. :-\

IMO, I think you should try shutting norton down, and seeing where your cpu usage stands. I know AVG uses alot of cpu on my machine.

the thing is is that this Norton cant be shut off unless your on my mom's account..... i can stop some scanning but not all... Norton shouldn't be effecting my CPU usage that dramatically though :-\

i just realized this has everything to do with internet connection because as soon as i load up halo the CPU usage is 13% (about normal) and when i bring up the lobby still 13% but when i connect to a server boom 100% and LAN servers are about 18% so i don't think my virus protection is causing it. i have a secondary router hooked up for if my brother or i need to use internet on our laptops ..... im definitely not getting that 'oh do u like Comcast 'cause it's faster!' service.

i dont know how i can help my internet connection tbh  :roll eyes:

You probably have your Halo Network Setting set INCORRECTLY.  (At least that would be PART of your problem.... You'd need to do more investigation before I'd even guess as to where/what your real problem is....  ::) )

Read here about setting your Halo Network Setting correctly....

Not sure if you've already tried this but....

I would suggest to play another full screen game if you have one. See if you experience the same troubles. Make sure you connect to an online server. This will determine if your Halo itself is the culprit or something else.

If you've already done that: What type of lag are you experiencing?

FPS or Ping?
